Subject: Problems Installing MSDE2000 SQL Database Engine
Date: May 6, 2002

Question: Why am I having problems installing the MSDE2000 database engine.

Answer: The MSDE2000 is a limited edition of Microsoft SQL Sever (more details).   Usually, users have no problem installing this powerful database engine.  On the rare occasion when problems are encountered, the error messages from the Microsoft install program are not very helpful.  Usually, the error will simply state that the install failed.  Below is a list of the most common problems and suggested resolutions.

Windows Versions (excluding 95)

Permission Issue - Usually, the problem is a permission issue.   The MSDE is a low level program that updates some aspects of the operating system files.  It will not cause harm or problems from the installation.   However, it does require that the user making the installation be logged in to the computer with Full Administrative Privileges.  Try having your system administrator log in to the computer and perform the installation.  Once the installation is complete, the administrator will need to run ExpressMaintenance one time to create the actual ExpressMaintenance database.  After that, other non-administrative users can use the program and database engine.  Administrative privileges are only required during installation and startup of the database engine.

Remote Installation - Since the MSDE installation involves some operating system files, the installation must be conducted at the server computer.  You cannot conduct the installation remotely using terminal server or other software.

Version Issue - The MSDE does require that certain service packs or release of the operating system be used.  Usually, these are important updates that should be installed in the version of Windows anyway.  For more details, see the tech bulletin on operating system requirements.

Computer Name Change - The MSDE database engine inherits the computer name as the SQL Database Server name.  If you change the computer name, the SQL Server will no longer start and will indicate it is corrupt or has been tampered with.  You can correct this by changing the computer name back and then starting the SQL Server database engine using Start / Startup / Service Manager.  Otherwise, you can take certain steps to resolve the issue.  For a tech bulletin with  complete details on backing up data and reinstalling MSDE - click here.

Previous Installation

Another possible problem with the MSDE installation is a case where the MSDE has been previously installed and removed.  If not removed properly, certain registry entries will remain preventing the program to reinstall.  To resolve this problem, you must run regedit.exe and remove certain registry entries.  Click on Start, Run, type regedit and click Ok.  Open  Hkey_Local_Machine / Software / Microsoft.  Locate the entry for MSSQLServer, right click on it and delete the entry.  Close the regedit program and try the installation over.

Windows 95

Windows95 well preceded Microsoft SQL Server and the MSDE database engine.  The database engine requires certain components (DCOM and MDAC) which are not part of the windows95 operating system.

If you are having problems installing the MSDE Database Engine on a computer running Windows95, please take the following steps:

  1. Make sure you are running Windows95 revision B.
  2. Login to your system using the Administrator login and password.
  3. Remove the MSQL7 folder from your hard drive to erase partially installed files.
  4. Install DCOM by running the installation file dcom95.exe which is on our CD in the Extras folder.  You can download from our website - click here to download.
  5. Install MDAC by running the installation file ODBCInstall.exe which is on our CD in the Extras folder.  You can download from our website - click here to download.
  6. After installing each component, try installing the MSDE Database Engine from the ExpressMaintenance CD.

Following these steps should resolve the issue and install the database engine on your Windows95 computer.
