Subject: How to create additional databases for an application.
Date: May 16, 2001

Question: Can I create a separate application database for a different division or subsidiary of my company.

Answer: All Express Technology applications allow for unlimited databases.   Each new database is created from a startup database found in the root folder of the application.  The following are instructions for creating a new database.

Instructions

  1. Perform the following steps on the computer that contains the MSDE database server to create a new database.  The following example uses ExpressMaintenance.

  2. Make sure you are on the computer (server) with the MSDE and the application.

  3. Download and install the latest release of ExpressUtility from our website at: http://www.expresstechnology.com/DownloadTrial.htm

  4. After installing, run ExpressUtility at the server computer.

  5. Click on File / Register New Server to Setup the server using the user name of  "sa" and the password of "welcome" (blank) or the proper password as set by your company.

  6. Connect to the server by clicking on the server name.

  7. Connect to the ExpressMaintenance database by clicking on the database name.

  8. In the Data Connection tab, click the "Create New Database"  button (upper center cylinder looking graphic) and follow steps of the wizard.

  9. You will be prompted for the new database name.

  10. You will be prompted for the source model database files which can be found in the ExpressTech folder.  The files are "ExpressMaintenance_Data.MDF" and "ExpressMaintenance_Log.LDF".

  11. You will be prompted for the destination folder where the SQL database will reside.  This is usually the folder of "\Program Files\MSSQL\Data" or \MSSQL7\Data" but may be different on your computer depending on where SQL was installed.

  12. Click Next and Finish to have the database created.

  13. You must now click on the server name to refresh the list of available databases.

  14. Click on the newly created database.

  15. Next, click on the Explore Data tab and then the SQL Users tab.

  16. Click on the Reset etuser SQL Account button (yellow sign with explanation mark) to create / reset the etuser login account which is used by ExpressMaintenance.

  17. Next, you will need to create a new shortcut to run ExpressMaintenance and connect to the new database.  You should do this at the server first, test and then on the workstations.

  18. Create a shortcut to the application on the desktop.

  19. Right click on the new shortcut and rename it as desired.

  20. Right click on the new shortcut and select properties.

  21. Locate the field for the Target program.

  22. The Target field will likely appear as: "C:\ExpressTech\Maintenance.exe".

  23. At the end, add two more parameters separated by a space and quotation marks.  These two parameters represent the Server Name and the New Database Name.  For example: "C:\ExpressTech\Maintenance.exe" "ServerName or IP"  "ExpressMaintenance2"

  24. Make sure each parameter is separated by a space and has quotes around it.

  25. Click Ok to save the new parameters for the shortcut.

  26. Run the new shortcut and the application should run connecting to the new database.  If not, make sure you have the server and database parameters correct.  If you can connect in ExpressUtility, you should be able to connect with ExpressMaintenance.

  27. A new serial number will be generated and you will need to email that to support@ExpressTechnology to obtain a new registration code.

Problems

If you have problems, check the parameters in the shortcut and make sure the Server Name or IP address is correct and that the parameters are properly separated by spaces and have quotation marks around them.  If you still have problems, report the exact error message to Express Technology support staff.
